The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus offers a Vietnamese for Heritage Learners sequence locally, and a traditional four-semester sequence through the CourseShare program. Instead of a course placement test, there is a non-binding self-placement tool to help guide students to the right course for them.

What is your most recent level of foreign language study?

Students with no prior background in Vietnamese, or who cannot read or write at all in the language

No placement assistance is required if you have never taken a Vietnamese language course before, and have limited previous experience with Vietnamese. Please register for LANG 1121 through the CourseShare program. Note that space is limited in this course.

Students who have lived in Vietnam, use Vietnamese at home, or have exposure to Vietnamese through their family or community (including some ability to read and write)

Please take the Vietnamese Self-Assessment and Proficiency Tool, which will guide you to the right course. Please note that depending on your level, the instrument may recommend a course offered through the CourseShare program. Although the results of this self-placement instrument are not binding, you should select a course that is appropriate for your level.
